USGIF Update

USGIF Staffers Earn Professional Recognition

USGIF Director of Business Development and Events Jeffrey T. Ley recently earned his Certified in Exhibition Management (CEM) designation through the International Association of Exhibitions and Events. This certification was created in 1975 to raise professional standards and is recognized throughout the industry as the premier mark of professional achievement. To earn the designation, participants must complete a nine-part program within three years.

The program is composed of seven mandatory courses and two courses chosen from five available electives. Symbolizing achievement, commitment and a place among the top-ranking professionals in the worldwide exhibition and events industry, this CEM designation will provide USGIF members with even greater advantages and service into the future.

In addition, Dr. R. Maxwell Baber, USGIF’s academic director, recently was unanimously elected as an affiliate faculty member of George Mason University’s Department of Geography and Geoinformation Science. Baber joined USGIF late last year, and has been working tirelessly to increase participation in the USGIF Geospatial Intelligence Certificate and Accreditation Program while simultaneously advancing other educational aspirations of the foundation.

Seats Remain for GEOINT 101

The first 2010 course of GEOINT 101 is filling quickly, but a few seats remain. The one-day course, titled “We are all GEOINTers,” provides an introduction to the fundamentals of the GEOINT community, core GEOINT technologies and operations, and the role of GEOINT in national security affairs supporting decision makers and operations.

The class costs $750 per registrant and takes place March 23 at the Intelligence & Security Academy’s office in Reston, Va. Discounts are available for USGIF members, groups and individuals who enroll in multiple OpenIntell Academy classes.

Those interested in getting into the geospatial intelligence field, newly hired employees working with GEOINT, members of the IC looking for a better understanding of all the intelligence disciplines and even longtime veterans of the GEOINT community can all benefit from this course.

More information about pricing and other courses can be found at the the Intelligence & Security Academy Website, www.intellacademy.com, or at USGIF’s Website, www.usgif.org.

Brian Hibblen Highlights GEOINTeraction Tuesday

Assistant Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Special Capabilities Brian Hibbeln addressed a crowd of 60 at USGIF’s January 2010 GEOINTeraction Tuesday event.

Hibbeln’s speech came as a landmark for the Office of Advanced Systems and Concepts, as this was the first time anyone from the office had spoken publicly about its capabilities and services. His speech included a vast amount of information about the organization, mainly concentrating on the current state of the Advanced Concept Technology Demonstrations and Joint Capability Technology Demonstrations programs and where they are headed in the future.

Hibbeln also addressed the many ways USGIF member companies can better serve the organization, as well as how to get their services and technologies noticed and supported. He finished his speech by informing the audience of key capability areas where the Office of the Secretary of Defense hopes to see more innovation, followed by a short question and answer session with the audience. The next GEOINTeraction Tuesday event will take place March 9 at Wildfire in McLean, Va.

Tech Days, AGIC, GEOGala and FMV Workshop

Tech Days has grown over the past several years to include a week of events for the geospatial intelligence community. What was once only a classified and unclassified day of exhibits that ended in a black-tie gala has expanded to include emerging technology demonstrations, learning workshops and a communitywide networking reception. Last year USGIF brought in the Army Geospatial and Imagery Conference (AGIC) during the same week and kicked off the weeklong series of events with the first ever USGIF Invitational.

This year, during the week of May 17-21, there are plans to even further expand the offerings with a potential academic day, science fair, an offering of the GEOINT 101 course, and possibly multiple workshops during the week. On May 17 we’ll head out for an afternoon of networking on the golf course.

AGIC begins the next day on May 18 and runs through the week. USGIF will provide opportunities for AGIC attendees to visit NGA Bethesda on May 19 for its classified demos and to attend the unclassified day of exhibits and the networking social on Thursday, May 20. On May 21, the day will begin with a USGIF Workshop Series event on motion imagery and FMV, and conclude with the annual GEOGala.

We can’t wait to see you there.

Save the Date: NGA West Showcase

The National Geospatial- Intelligence Foundation has again asked USGIF to help highlight and share with the GEOINT community the critically important work that takes place at the NGA West facility. USGIF will invite its members and the GEOINT community for discussions, product demonstrations and networking opportunities on June 22-23 in St. Louis, Mo.

This year’s agenda will be very similar to last year’s, which began with a panel of NGA employees sharing their deployment experiences. The day continued with NGA showcasing the unique capabilities of its West facility through a number of technology demonstrations and tours. At the end of the day, attendees were invited to a special networking opportunity with NGA West employees. More information about the 2010 NGA West Showcase will be available online in March.

Register for the International Commercial Remote Sensing Symposium

Seats are almost sold out, but there is still time to register for the remote sensing event of the year. Discounted pricing is available for active military, government employees, and full-time academic administrators, educators and students.

The 2010 International Commercial Remote Sensing Symposium takes place March 3-5 at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center, 1300 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C.

USGIF, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Department of Commerce have partnered to deliver three days of discussions, exhibits and networking opportunities for the international remote sensing community.

In addition to invited keynotes speakers, including Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke, Representative C. A. Dutch Ruppersberger and NOAA Administrator Dr. Jane Lubchenco, the leaders of major electro-optical and SAR companies as well as users from around the world will give their perspectives during these panels: E/O Industry Strategic Updates, User Communities, Resolution Limits, Commercial Space Radar, How Healthy is the Global Industrial Base, the Future of Commercial Space, and the Remote Sensing 2.0 CEO Roundtable.
